Connecting cultures and oceans
Tramay is more than just a band; it is a living organism, a creature half-human, half-aquatic, emerging from the depths of the Indian Ocean.
Our Philosophy
"I TRAP I MAY" (I catch, I weave): The net captures to allow sharing. It is a promise to connect cultures and people. A live experience with Tramay is a magical, organic moment where communion transforms a concert into a ritual of shared vibrations. A sonic net cast toward the horizon to capture the threads that bind us.
"INDO-CREOLE WAVES": A pioneering style where the sacred meets Reunion Island’s Maloya, engaging in a dialogue with the precision of Indian Carnatic music and the deep rhythms of the Afro-World tradition.
"WEAVING BEATS": The group’s international artistic signature, evoking the complex and organic rhythmic tapestry that travels beyond borders.
A LABORATORY OF RYTHM AND EMOTION
Tramay is a pioneering project born from the fusion of two spirits: Florence, whose vocals carry a touching expressiveness, and David, whose virtuosity as a percussionist redefines the boundaries of Maloya.
Moving far beyond "folkloric" clichés, the group offers "interlocking rhythmic resonance." This is a unique process of métissage (cross-breeding) where the authenticity of Reunion Island roots joins the rigor of Carnatic music and global percussions. As "sound-fishermen," they cast their net into the world's currents to bring back an organic, rhythmic, and soulful sound.
The story of Tramay is written between the shores of Reunion Island and the lands of India. For Florence and David, discovering Carnatic music was a catalyst for an unprecedented fusion: Konnakol (the Indian percussive language) unites with Creole, creating a blended resonance where Maloya is reinvented. Their creations are infused with their lived experiences in India, Africa, and beyond.
Tramay carries within it both the scars and the beauty of Reunion Island’s history. While deeply rooted in the volcanic soil of their home, their gaze is fixed on the open sea. Eschewing "postcard exoticism," the group approaches essential themes with finesse and sensitivity.
As experienced educators in dance, body percussion, and Moringue, the founders’ commitment goes beyond the stage. They remain close to the daily life of the neighborhoods they depict with poetry in their songs. Writing in Reunion Creole, they explore the island’s history and contemporary social issues—urbanization, the legacy of slavery, and the condition of women—with profound depth and tenderness.
« What can we expect from Tramay? Another maloya band? Perhaps, but one "with a distinctly Indian influence", setting them apart. They are a group that invites you on a gentle, immersive journey, carried by a fusion of Creole Indian groove, African and Brazilian swing, and a wealth of rhythms fused with the sound of passion, the dance of conviviality, and shared enchantment. »
David began to learn music by himself and was performing from the early age of 11 with maloya music bands. He is a cultural activist and participates in the rehabilitation of the local martial art moring. He has finished studying percussions at the Regional Conservatory and teaches and tours all over the world as a professional musician notably with Christine Salem.
A choreographer, lead vocalist, and true all-around artist, Florence’s work is shaped by an extraordinary journey. From leading her dance company Maloya Métiss to spearheading the Tramay project, she brings a "combatant’s" spirit and undeniable flair to everything she touches. Through her songwriting and international performances, Florence carries the colors of Tramay across the globe, singing her truth with heart and unwavering passion.
