Transe Mêlée (Mixed Trance)
Created in 2013, "Transe Mêlée" is a dynamic and adaptable performance piece that has evolved from four to three, and then two artists. Ranging from 30 minutes to a full hour, this work seamlessly transitions between street performance and theatrical settings, inviting active audience participation.
This unique collaboration brings together Raveendran, a master of the ancient South Indian martial art, Kalaripayattu, and Florence Latappy's distinctive blend of contemporary dance, infused with Maloya, African dance, and Moringue.
The piece recounts a transformative journey to India, an initiatory path for the artists. "The organic rhythm of nature reflects our true selves," the artists express, "a rhythm we must honor to perceive the world through our senses, body, mind, and soul, united in every moment. How can we live in harmony with this intrinsic nature? This question propels the artists beyond familiar imagery for some, and exotic visions for others."
The soundscape of Kerala—the clamor of streets, the songs of native birds, the resonance of temple music, and the rhythmic chanting of an Indian dance teacher—transports the audience to another realm. The sensory tapestry unfolds: the pungent aroma of spices, the vibrant hues of fabrics, the contrasting scents of decay and jasmine, the torrential rains and scorching heat, the swirling dust, and the endless human processions, their faces as striking as the deities of Kathakali.
Réunion Island rediscovers its ancestral connections, clinging to and swirling within the folds of white saris. Dancers sway to the melodies of Carnatic songs, conjuring an India yet to be fully explored.
"Transe Mêlée" embodies a cultural fusion, weaving Maloya and African rhythms with Tamil Asian influences. Pilgrims from around the globe join this spiritual procession, invoking the pantheon of gods in both India and Réunion Island.
