"I'm Coming For The Umgossi" exemplifies our approach to creating evolving series from a core work. Material is extracted from the original piece and reimagined for new versions, tailored to diverse performance spaces (often unconventional locations like public gardens or shopping malls), varied contexts, and evolving artistic collaborations. While maintaining their essential atmosphere, these adaptations delve deeper into specific aspects, highlighting different facets of the explored themes.
"I'm Coming For The Umgossi..." (meaning "I'm coming to tell gossip" in Soweto slang) was initially conceived through a collaborative exchange between South African artist Kagiso Mabe, Mozambican artist Katia Manjate, and Réunionese artists Florence Latappy and Didier Filo.
This work was later adapted as a duo in Réunion, titled "I'm Coming For...", drawing inspiration from Florence's workshops with young students on women's experiences and gender dynamics.
"Laféladi" represents the outdoor performance adaptation of the same piece. This iteration further refines the dance's style and aesthetic, incorporating strong references to Charlie Chaplin's films through the portrayal of grotesque characters.
